This article tries to review, from the viewpoint of polymerism, the process of the development of cross-strait relation for the past 50 years from total disconnection to the present restricted exchanges. The scope for discussion includes cross-strait exchanges in the political, economic, social and cultural aspects, with emphasis on the problems and bottle-necks encountered in these exchanges.

This article also tries, by means evolution direction of political development, to discuss the various possible directions of developments of Mainland China in the 21st century, with emphasis on which direction of development is most suitable for the normalization and comprehensivisation of cross-strait exchanges, and on the possibility of an eventual cross-strait reunification.

Both the May 4th and the June 4th were artificial movements. So do we also need artificial factors to precipitate the cross-strait reunification, or simply let it go its natural course of evolution? This is something worth mulling.
