17th Apr, 1989 (Mon)

"Long Live Democracy!
Long Live Fredom!"

At around 1pm, 600 students and teachers from the China University of Political Science and Law marched towards Tiananmen square, carrying banners and wreath. They chanted slogans such as "Long live democracy", "Long live freedom", "Save the country with rule of law", "Save the country with education", "Comrade Hu lives on forever in our hearts". By the time they reached Tiananmen Square, the procession has swelled to well over 10,000.

There were also marched in Shanghai. The Shanghai authorities issued a notice urging students and citizens to be on alert of "bad elements" who would attempt to derail proper mourning activities.
