Autonomous Students’ Federation Held Press Conference

1st May, 1989 (Mon)

"Where has Stalin gone?"

Contrary to the past thirty years' custom of displaying portraits of Marx, Engels, Lenin, and Stalin on the wall of Tiananmen on May Day, only portraits of Dt. Sun Yat-sen and Mao Zedong were displayed in this year's celebration.

The People's Daily editorial reiterated that China's economic reform required a politically stable society; other newspapers also address similar matters.

Students and press from all over China gathered at Beijing University for a press conference given by the Autonomous Students' Federation. Plans developed for a major demonstration on May 4th to commemorate the seventieth anniversary of the May 4th movement.

The Hong Kong College Student Union convenes and decided to establish the Chinese Democracy Foundation to raise money and to plan a mass gathering and demonstration for May 4th.
