12th May, 1989 (Fri)
"Death to the Writers!"
At a press conference, State Council spokesman Yuan Mu urged students to refrain from staging another demonstration during the Sino-Soviet summit, stressing the importance to "safeguard China's international image".
National People's Congress Chairman Wan Li left Beijing for a twenty-one-day official visit to Canada and the United States.
Muslims marched in several cities to protest the publication of a book that was deemed insulting. Protesters burned the offending books and demanded that the writers and editors be punished harshly or even killed. The muslims' demonstration in Beijing, participated by several thousands, had prior approval from the Public Security Bureau and the procession followed the designated route.
