Celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - In the hope of Actualizing Human Rights

60 years ago, the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; the global communities had declared all human are born equal in dignity and in rights. Unfortunately, after 60 years of its enactment, we are still witnessing to various human rights violations. On 7 December, the theme for Human Rights Day Carnival 2008 is “Actualizing Human Rights”, with 32 NGOs gathering at Mong Kok Sai Yeung Choi Street South Pedestrian Zone. Through various activities in demonstrating to the public how human rights are being violated, including the latest human rights violations by law enforcement of Hong Kong and China. These violations had been heavily criticized by the United Nations Human Rights Treaty Bodies. We also urge the government to set up a Human Rights Commission with independent jurisdiction and power to adequately protect human rights for all.
Human Rights Day Carnival 2008 is going to be held at 2 pm on 7 December at Mong Kok Sai Yeung Choi Street South Pedestrian Zone. The purpose of the carnival is to advocate for actualizing human rights for all, and in promoting human rights education. Non-government Organizations with diverse background would set up booths, through games, exhibitions, drama, dance to illustrate the human rights condition in Hong Kong and in China. With focus of police abuse of power, racial discrimination, oppression of sexual minorities rights, limiting the freedom of speech and freedom of information. The organizers urge the public to be concerned on the human rights violations, and join in the advocacy for the setting up of an independent Human Rights Commission with wide jurisdiction and adequate of power to protect human rights.
